Articles are small words that come before a noun to tell us if the noun is specific or general.
Think of them as pointers: one type points to a very specific object, while the other type points to any random object of that kind.
There are two types of articles in English: Definite and Indefinite.

## 1. Indefinite Articles (A / An)
Use these when you are talking about any general, non-specific item, or when introducing something for the first time. You can only use them with singular nouns you can count.

* 
* Use A: Before words that start with a consonant sound (b, c, d, f, g, etc.).
* Example: I saw a dog in the park. (Any random dog, not a specific one).
* Use An: Before words that start with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).
* Example: She ate an orange. (Any orange).
* 

⚠️ Watch out for sounds, not just letters!


* We say "an hour" because the 'h' is silent (it sounds like our).
* We say "a university" because the 'u' sounds like a 'y' (yoo-niversity).


## 2. Definite Article (The)
Use this when you are talking about a specific, particular item that both you and the listener already know about. You can use it for both singular and plural nouns.

 
* Example 1: Let’s watch the movie we talked about. (A specific movie, not just any film).
* Example 2: The moon looks beautiful tonight. (There is only one specific moon).

See how changing the article completely changes the meaning of a sentence:

| "Pass me a pen." | Give me any pen you can find nearby. I don't care about the color or brand. |
| "Pass me the pen." | Give me that specific pen we both see on the desk. |

## 3. The "Zero" Article (No Article)
Sometimes, you do not need an article at all. This happens with plural nouns being general, proper nouns (names), or abstract concepts.


* Example (General plural): I love cats. (Not "the cats")
* Example (Names/Places): He lives in Paris. (Not "the Paris").
